Women who changed the world.


Project linked to Sciences and History, related to Women’s Day (8th March)

1- BACKGROUND
Adults: GES 2 pupils (A2)
AIMS
1 Linguistic: to use past simple forms, time connectors and other linking words.
2 Non-linguistic: to improveICT skills, to do collaborative work and to introduce other subjects (History and Sciences - CLIL).
3 Purpose: to create a presentation on a woman who contributed to society with an invention or discovery which changed the way we live and present her work to the whole class.

1-Introduction
Teacher shows a video with photos of different inventions. Students make a list of the things they see in the video.



Students compare their answers before the list is projected on board.

New vocabulary is introduced: life raft, DNA structure
Students label the pictures and match women inventors and their inventions. (Worksheet 1)

2-Task
Step 1- Scaffolding: Students are given a factfile on Marie Curie (Factfile)
They need to write a short text in the past with the data in the factfile. Then the teacher shows them a sample answer, with time connectors and linking words. They will use that as a model to write their script for the presentation.

Step 2- Students form groups of 3 and choose one of the women inventors to make a presentation using Powerpoint or Prezi.

Step 3- Students research on their choice and write the script.

Step 4- Students look for pictures to add to the presentation.

Step 5- Sts Create their presentation and prepare two questions for their peers to answer while they are presenting their work.

Step 6- Sts present their work and their peers answer the questions.

ASSESSMENT

The project will be assessed by the teacher following these rubrics. Students will participate in the assessment of the oral presentation. For each presentation, a student, randomly, will be given an assessment grid to fill. In that way the group will be assessed by the teacher and one of their peers.

This project will be 20% of the final grade for the 2nd term.
