MASTERPIECES IN PAINTING 

4th ESO MINI-PROJECT

AIMS
  • to learn about masterpieces in painting
  • to describe a painting
  • to summarize information
  • to make a presentation

Students will be learning:
  • How to research information
  • How to use language in context
  • How to use prepositions of place, passive structures and there is/there are
  • How to make a description of a painting
  • How to create a PowerPoint presentation or Prezi presentation
  • How to work cooperatively

End product
  • Oral Presentation of a famous painting
    • Students will present a famous painting to their classmates using a Powerpoint or Prezi presentation.

STAGES
Introduction:
  1. Students form pairs.
  2. Students look at the Wordle.

  1. The teacher asks them: “Are those words familiar to you? Which ones? What do you think they refer to?"

Language focus

  1. Students are told to look at the Animoto video and the teacher asks: “Do you recognize any paintings? Have you seen them in your coursebook?, Do you know the name of any author or painting?”
  2. Follow-up: Students do -either on their own mobile phones or on the computer- the matching activity on Quizlet (match the author with the painting). 
  3. The teacher selects 10 paintings from the Quizlet and tells the students what they will have to do:
    1. in pairs, choose one painting 
    2. fill in a fact file with the chosen masterpiece
    3. write a brief description of the masterpiece using the model of the fact file provided (diversity: high and low levels)
    4. create a 5 -10 question Kahoot to check their classmates’ understanding


     7.  Then, the teacher shows a sample of what s/he expects as the end product, this is, a Power Point or Prezi presentation of Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam" and gives them the fact file for taking notes, since they will also have to fill in a fact file for each of thei classmate's presentations.
    1. The teacher shows and comments the assessment rubric (student´s version) so they know the assessment criteria.  However s/he will be using a slightly different version

  1. To check comprehension, the teacher runs a 5 -10 question Kahoot.
  2. Students play on Quizlet in order to get familiar with the useful expressions to be used in the writing task (matching English expressions with the Spanish translation).
  3. Teacher hands out the useful expressions on paper format to the students so that they become familiar with them..

Research and preparation for writing

     11.Students look for information about their masterpiece.
     12. Students complete their own fact file.
     13. After gathering all the information, students start thinking about the questions for their Kahoot. (maximum 2 from the fact file and the rest from their presentation)

Writing (final version + design)

     14. Students start writing their painting description and the Powerpoint
     15. Students start preparing the Kahoot about their own masterpiece.
     16. The teacher goes around the class to monitor and correct written productions.

Presentation

     17. A group gives their oral presentation while the other students complete the Listening Masterpiece Fact-File.
